This is a multi step process but well worth the effort. These pickles make the best tuna salad and deviled eggs in the world. We used to get the Lilly Lime (calcium hydroxide) from the drugstore. Soak the cucumber slices in Lilly lime over night. No mention of water, unsure whether it means soak in the cucumber juice or what. I have made this recipe but it was a while ago. Drain. Put in a pan, cover with cold water and 1/2 cup table salt. Stand 4 hours. Rinse well. Add cold water. Stand 2 hours Drain. Cover with cold water and 1/4 cup Allum. Bring to a heavy boil. Rinse and drain well. Make syrup (vinegar, sugar, spices - cinnamon and cloves in a cheesecloth bag) Boil syrup add cucumbers. cook 30 minutes, let cool. Pack jars. Heat syrup to boil and top off jars. The recipe says 1/2 package each celery seed, and mustard seed. We think a package is about 1 ounce but maybe you know. Makes 14 pints.
