Note: Eleanor of Castile & Leon was the daughter of King Ferdinand III, the Saint, who was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671, King of Castile and Leon. King Henry III had negotiated Edward's marriage to Eleanor and they were married when she was 8 and Edward was 15. They had between 15 and 17 children born to them, 4 were sons. Five daughters and one son reached adulthood. There is a story that Eleanor saved Edward's life at Acre (now in Isreal) by sucking poison from a dagger wound. Upon her death, 28 November 1290 at Harby, Nottinghamshire, York, age 47, Edward erected the famous Eleanor Crosses. There were 12 crosses erected, one was placed at each site where her coffin rested for the night on the way back to Westminster Abby where she is buried. Several Eleanor Crosses still stand today.
