| The Portland Fish Exchange uses a 3% tare for groundfish. Except
on the larger auctions, your fish is broken out into one or two
300-pound lots (assuming you have enough weight) so that smaller buyers
have access to your fish in volumes they can work with. After
that, the lot size varies from 600 to 1,200 pounds depending on the
species and size of the fish.
The Exchange regularly double-checks their weights, and I have done
independent checks of my own. Their weights are
among the most accurate I have seen in the business.
